Scripture Memorization, Part 2

Methods of Memorization Choosing a method of memorization can take some time.  Often, the methods that work as you get started or as a young child are not the ones that work as you grow and mature.  Sometimes a passage is challenging and requires a new approach.  And sometimes you just need something new to make the memory work interesting. Here are some ideas for how to incorporate your senses as you memorize. Visual Learning Draw a picture to represent each part of the passage. Write the passage down on a poster board and put it in a prominent place in your house. Studying from the Discovery Journal

When you register for the Bible Bee Summer Study, you will receive a study guide called the Discovery Journal.  This Bible study is designed to be used throughout the 8-week Summer Study program.  Participants complete one lesson per day, 5 days per week. Each lesson is divided into two sections: Navigate and Explore.  The Navigate section covers the core material for the study and takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.  For deeper study, you may continue on to the Explore section.  This may take an additional 10-15 minutes to complete. For Beginner and Primary participants, especially those participating for the first time, it will most likely be necessary for a parent to work through the Discovery Journal with their child.  Juniors, Seniors, and some older Primary participants should be able to work independently. Having a plan of how to study will help you to make the most of the Discovery Journal.  Here are some steps you can f...

Strategies for Making Bible Bee Part of Your Summer Routine

Summer can be a challenging time to do regular Bible study and memorization.  Between special summer activities, vacations, and other commitments, you may be struggling to get through the Discovery Journal units each week.  Here are some ideas that may help as you find ways to fit Bible Bee into your family's normal routines. Be the Early Bird Do Bible Bee first thing in the morning once you are ready for the day.  Get it done before you head out the door for those fun summer activities. Be Consistent Find a time of day that you can commit to studying every day (or which ever days of the week you determine).  Make sure that you sit down with your Bible and Discovery Journal at that time each and every day, even if you are unfocused, have interruptions, or have a shorter time that day to do it.  Sometimes building a habit means that you have to make the thing happen no matter what. Pockets of Time Is there a time of day when your children normally do homew...

Strengthening the Memory Muscle

Memorization is a skill that can be practiced and developed over time.  Everyone has the ability to memorize.  For some the skill comes very easily.  For others it may require a lot of hard work.  But the fact remains, it is an ability that anyone can develop with enough consistent effort. The Memory Muscle You may have heard it said that the skill of memorization is like a muscle.  Put it under some stress, give it time to recover, and you will begin to see growth in your ability to memorize.  An easy way to strengthen your memory muscle is to work on short bursts of memorization  and review  each day. Imagine going to the gym to strengthen your bicep muscles by performing bicep curls.  In order not to injure yourself, it is important to do a warm-up set of curls before adding more weight to the dumb bells.  This is the same as the  review  part of memory work.  Start your memorization for the day with a few minutes of re...
