How to Use the Discovery Journal

When you register for the Bible Bee Summer Study, you will receive a study guide called the Discovery Journal.  This Bible study is designed to be used throughout the 8-week Summer Study program.  Participants complete one lesson per day, 5 days per week.

Each lesson is divided into two sections: Navigate and Explore.  The Navigate section covers the core material for the study and takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.  For deeper study, you may continue on to the Explore section.  This may take an additional 10-15 minutes to complete.

For Beginner and Primary participants, especially those participating for the first time, it will most likely be necessary for a parent to work through the Discovery Journal with their child.  Juniors, Seniors, and some older Primary participants should be able to work independently.

Having a plan of how to study will help you to make the most of the Discovery Journal.  Here are some steps you can follow or modify so that your study time is focused and productive.  Younger participants who are ready to become independent in their studying can be taught these steps, as well.

1. Review flashcards from previous lessons.

You can make your own flashcards, put them on a ring, make a Quizlet set, or find an online template to create printable flashcards.  Reviewing flashcards can be as simple as flipping through your set or you can get creative and play games with them.

2. Highlight Hebrew/Greek words and other definitions in the lesson.

Look for the magnifying glass symbol and definition/word study text boxes.  By skimming the DJ text, try to find the verse in the study passage where the word is found.  Mark the reference.

3. Highlight cross-references in the lesson.

Look through each page of the lesson so you don’t miss any references.  As you are looking, underline references to the book of study passage and circle any important keywords that show up in the text.  Pay attention to these verses and keywords.  They will often relate to the cross-references and will help you make connections.

4. Complete the lesson.

Be thorough and do not rush.  As you work through the lesson, create flashcards for the Hebrew/Greek words, definitions, and cross-references that you have highlighted.
